A LAWYER who paid himself legal fees from the proceeds of a client's crime has been given a suspended jail term.
Peter Simon Lustig, 50, pleaded guilty to money laundering and to having a deficiency in a trust account. A cheque for $69,000 from a client of Lustig's was supposed to go to victims, but a settlement couldn't be reached.
Justice Simon Whelan said it was not a case of conscious dishonesty, but Lustig should have known the funds came from an illegal source. He jailed Lustig, of Elsternwick, for three months and suspended the term for one year.
